Email Schemes

In my work as a practicing attorney, I've come across a number of people that have been taken by fraudulent emails. The format varies, but in general, you get an email that in some way promises you money if you'll just contact the sender and tell them what bank account to transfer the money to. It may be inheritance, lottery or sweepstakes, or someone in a desperate situation just needing your help (and offering money for it).

Since I spend a lot of time on the internet, I get several of these as well, even though I have spam filters. In order to help inform and protect the public, I've decided to post the text of the emails I receive that look fishy to me.

If you suspect you have received such an email, feel free to forward it on to me at wworsham@mac.com and I'll be happy to take a look at it for you.

The thing about this that gives me pause is the check or money order
for extra money. It is a common scam for people to send a counterfeit
check or money order for too much money, usually A LOT too much money
and then ask you to just cash it and send back the extra because they
"trust" you and then you get stuck for the bad draft.
